Every local knows of Russell Falls at the entrance to Mount Field National Park. It is a small walk from the car, maybe 30 minutes, and when you enter t is a surreal experience breathtaking by its beauty. Many times you can visit without anyone else there. However, during summer months it can get over run with tourists.
Spring time is the best time to visit Russell Falls. Sometimes it can be a beautiful spring day in Tasmania, maybe 20 degrees Celsius, but make sure you ring extra clothes as it can turn quickly. A beautiful walk through tree capped pathways with the occasional local fauna passing by. While it is far from the biggest waterfall, its majestic setting makes up for it and definitely worth visiting. Mount Field is about 40 minutes drive from Hobart.
During the winter, Mount Field can get snow, and there is a rudimental snow field that will not impress anyone from elsewhere, bit can be a bit of fun for the family. Still not the most ancient snow field in Tasmania as one had the infamous nut cracker, an invention from the turn of last century.
